Responsibilities
Dr. Maya Joseph serves as an Assistant Professor at William Paterson University, Paterson, NJ. In addition to her academic role, Dr. Joseph is a nurse researcher and a distinguished Jonas Scholar. Her research program focuses on social determinants of health, diabetes, and chronic health conditions, particularly among South Asian populations. She is actively engaged in an NIH-funded research study investigating the heightened cardiovascular risks within the South Asian community in collaboration with researchers from Rutgers University. This study, rooted in community-based participatory research (CBPR), aligns with Dr. Joseph’s commitment to bridging the research-practice gap, particularly within underserved populations. Dr. Joseph's research also includes studies on peer review practices in nursing graduate education and the development of cultural competence among healthcare professionals. Her work has been recognized through grant awards and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
In addition to her academic and research accomplishments, Dr. Joseph has held leadership roles within both healthcare and professional nursing organizations. She serves as an administrator on duty at a Level 1 trauma center and her leadership roles within the American Association of Indian Nurses of New Jersey (AAIN-NJ) and the National Association of Indian Nurses of America (NAINA) include Chair of Education and Professional Development (two terms), Website Chair, Newsletter Chair, and Co-Chair of Awards and Scholarships. Dr. Joseph also spearheaded NAINA’s collaboration with the American Nurses Association (ANA) on initiatives for the Nursing Obesity Network. Dr. Joseph’s extensive experience in professional development, community engagement, leadership, and scholarly practice underscores her dedication to advancing health equity and contributing meaningfully to society.
